Cannabis and Mental Illness

Professor Bearman told the Symposium that Attention Deficit Disorder may be caused by an endocannabinoid deficiency causing the brains neuro-impulses to move so quickly that they overwhelm the frontal quartex. It may follow that extra phytocannabinoid’s introduced from Cannabis oil would ease the disorder.

Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Bipolar, Schizophrenia

Cannabidiol (CBD) can be used to treat anxiety. THC has been used in studies to treat depression.

Cannabidiol could be useful in treating schizophrenia. Many people are aware of the argument that schizophrenia can actually be caused by recreational use of cannabis with high levels of THC. However, high doses of CBD actually have an antipsychotic affect. A German research team found CBD lowers schizophrenic attacks and one trial patient using CBD was completely freed of attacks.

University of Sydney doctors made the point at the Symposium that, though levels of recreational Cannabis use have risen quite profoundly in the past 30 years, levels of schizophrenia in Australia’s general public have not risen much at all. It seems the correlation between schizophrenia and cannabis is definitely an area for future research.

Next week’s blog will focus on some really exciting findings on Cannabis and neurological disease.
